Wansfell Pike, Ambleside, Loughrigg Fell, Kendal
After the success from Tissington, us mad GUCH walkers where at it again. The only difference this time was that we stayed for a weekend instead of just one day. Paul, my dad (Mike) and I stayed on a campsite in tents in Kendal, while Elizabeth and Hayley stayed in the local youth hostel.
On Friday night we met up at a pub in town and had dinner. We stayed there for a couple of hours and catched up on all the latest gossip. Unfortunately it had started to rain quite heavy when we went to bed so we got wet as some of us where sleeping in tents!
It was an early start to Saturday; we woke up at 8 am which was definitely too early! The clouds where too low to follow our planned walk over Bannisdale fell so we drove to Ambleside instead. On the walk we passed waterfalls, and then we started to walk up Wansfell Pike. It was quite difficult walking up as most of it was scrambling but the view at the top was worth it. On our way back down the 1581ft (482m) pike we found a sheltered corner out of the wind to have lunch. An exhausting day deserved a night in the pub, so that’s what we did!
Unfortunately Sunday was an even earlier start because we had to take the tents down and cook breakfast. It was our last day in the Lakes so we thought we would plan another walk. Once again we headed to Ambleside and parked near Windermere Lake. Our walk started with a brief visit to the remains of an ancient Roman fort. It was then onwards and upwards as we climbed the 1100ft (335m) of Loughrigg fell. After posing for photographs at the trig point, we dropped down to the banks of Grasmere. The route back to the car was then a flat walk passed the banks of Rydal Water and along the main road back into Ambleside. The rain started as we approached Ambleside and just as we got to the car it was pouring down with rain!
All in all it was an enjoyable weekend, with reasonable weather (for the Lakes) and good company all round.
